The shoe designer shares her summer must-haves and what's ahead for her footwear business
As a student at College of Charleston, Cassidy Caulk would go out wearing stylish heels. Inevitably, before the night was over, her feet would hurt, and she’d want to change into more comfortable flats. So the business major started to design a prototype for a pair of foldable sandals that could easily fit into a handbag. Caulk launched Kindred Label last year with her patented design using elastic hinges and magnets to enable the leather soles to fold in half. The designer recently introduced a new “Catherine” slide and is working on more functional-yet-chic leather goods to add to her collection. Here, Caulk shares her other favorite summer styles.
Q What’s in your digital shopping cart that you hope to purchase soon?
A My online shopping cart is overflowing; I’m constantly searching for new trends and fresh brands. Currently, I’m on the lookout for chic tailored shorts, dresses, jumpsuits, and a stylish beach hat, such as Hat Attack’s “Continental,” for my summer getaways.
Q Who are some of your favorite local designers, and what are your favorite pieces?
A One of my top picks among local designers is Boysterous. Led by the talented Nicholas Overstreet, they craft exquisite leather goods, including handbags and wallets, all meticulously handmade in their downtown shop. While I’d love to own everything in their collection, I’m particularly drawn to the “Stingray Octo” clutch and their “Doctor’s Bag” line.
Q What are your go-to shoes when you aren’t wearing your Kindred sandals?
A It’s evident that I’m comfort-first as I tend to lean more toward sneakers, such as On Cloud’s “Roger Centre Court”
Q Other than your sandals, what are your favorite summer accessories?
A I have a passion for stylish yet practical handbags, particularly those I design myself. When it comes to jewelry, I always opt for gold earrings and a necklace, such as this “Atlas” chain from local brand Sun Vow, as gold consistently adds a touch of sophistication.
Q How do you style your Kindred sandals?
A My favorite way to pair my Kindreds is either with a dress or jeans; they effortlessly blend in and complement any outfit.
Q Is there an item in your closet that you couldn’t live without?
A A quality pair of denim is an absolute must-have! While the right jeans can be challenging to find, once discovered, they become the ultimate wardrobe staple.
