Ahead of the center's 30th anniversary this fall, Smalls shares what he’s wearing for Spoleto
The executive director of the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro has an eye for the unique, helping curate works from 300 South Carolina artists, specializing in traditional and folk art and contemporary crafts. Well-known in the arts scene in Charleston, Smalls often attends monthly art walks, Charleston Magazine Club (CMC) events, and local shows—always attired in impeccably tailored ensembles. (He won “best dressed” at last year’s CMC Steeplechase of Charleston event.) This fall, Smalls will play host as the Artisans Center celebrates its 30th anniversary. Here, he shares what he’ll be wearing to Spoleto performances.
Q Is there any local art that you want to add to your collection?
A I have always loved the artwork of Jonathan Green (above) and have recently discovered Arun Drummond, who creates folk art. I have my eye on one of his original pieces for my collection.
Q How do you transition your wardrobe to warmer weather?
A Living in the Lowcountry, we are fortunate to not have harsh transitions in seasons. My style usually stays the same. I just make changes in the weight of the fabrics and color from light to dark based on the season.
Q Do you have favorite clothing stores to shop?
A I love the brands at M. Dumas & Sons, such as Barbour jackets and Ferragamo shoes. When possible, I check out the inventory at Worn, an upscale menswear consignment shop in South Windermere.
Q Do you have a signature clothing item or accessory?
A Most definitely, it would be my sports coats, especially patterned ones. I like to pair them with pocket squares, coordinated watch bands, and shoe laces to set off the look. I wear them casually or dressed up. I am also known for my unique eyewear. Currently, I am wearing frames from Eyebobs.
Q Are you attending any Spoleto events? If so, what are you wearing?
A I usually go to the theater productions. I will probably be wearing a Scabal blazer with a pair of jeans from Billy Reid.
Q What’s in your real or virtual shopping cart that you hope to purchase soon?
A I am currently eyeing the 2024 Electric Hybrid Mini Cooper Countryman. It pairs well with my wardrobe.
