The designer talks about her latest collection and support of Black-owned businesses
Since launching in 2015, a year after graduating from College of Charleston, Striplin has grown her brand from her signature earrings to include bracelets and necklaces, as well as tops, skirts, and dresses in gingham, stripes, and Rainbow Row prints. Here, she talks about her latest collection, summer must-haves, and increased support of Black-owned businesses
Q You’re making masks from your fabric. Why did you feel that was important and what has the reaction been?
A We were on the fence since it wasn’t our typical product offering, but our customers started to request them so we delivered. We’ll continue to offer them as long as there’s a need. We have been blown away by the demand and so happy our shoppers want to stay safe and cute.
Q Tell us about your summer beauty routine.
A I love RMS Beauty when I’m wearing makeup (I’m a fan of the Living Luminizer Glow Quad), a good haircut from DNa Lab, and I can always count on WildCraft in South Windermere Shopping Center to keep me stocked up on the best nontoxic skin care products. I could not live without a fun manicure with nail art from Lu.nu.la Nail Lab.
Q What item brings you joy while working from home?
A I usually work at our shop so when I’m working from home, I value being able to sit down and focus. I love stationery—my friend Evelyn Henson just launched the cutest line of tasseled cards. I think it was made just for me.
Q What’s your go-to clothing item for this time of year?
A I love Ellender’s collection. The line is based here in Charleston and has some beautifully printed and ruffled pieces. I’ll also be wearing our Cumberland Midi dress all summer long! It’s comfy, has pockets, and just so easy to wear.
Q Tell us about your new garment collection.
A This collection is colorful, comfortable, and fun! The ruffles and patterns of our new ”Harleston” dress make it perfect for summertime strolls, parties, or work.
Q What’s your favorite shoe to pair with your designs?
A Espadrilles are such a classic style and go perfectly with everything. My favorite brand is Castañer.
Q Is there any brand you love because it’s so well-suited to you?
A BR Design Co. makes the most magical clay earrings and jewelry. Every piece is one of a kind, so colorful, and a little work of art. They just get me!
