In our Style File Q&A, Jenan shares her obsession with floral prints and what she's wearing this season
After therapy helped her heal following a family health scare, the Greenville native decided in 2021 to follow her dream of creating art full time. McClain uses acrylic and oil pastels to paint vibrant, textured works inspired by the salt marsh and coastal florals near her Mount Pleasant home. Last fall, she launched a collection of stationery, pillows, and handbags designed using her paintings with her business partner and photographer Beth Davis. This spring, Jenan McClain Fine Art & Design is debuting a clothing line, featuring cotton sateen skirts. Each item comes with a tag that says, “healing hearts peace by piece.” Here, McClain shares the styles she’s embracing this season.
Q Do you have a signature accessory?
A My parents owned a jewelry store for 40 years, and my mom gifted me a diamond and sapphire ring for my 40th birthday (above). It was created by a jewelry designer years ago for my mom, and it’s very special to me. I wear it every day.
Q What item in your wardrobe could you not live without?
A I discovered the brand Moussy Vintage, and I’m obsessed with these low-rise straight jeans (above).
Q Who are some of your favorite local artists? Tell us about a piece of theirs you own.
A This one is tough! Some of my favorites include Alice Colin, Nathan Durfee, Megan Aline Lange, Robin Howard, Olivia Bonilla, and Bri Wenke. I own small works from all of them. Pieces by Alice, Bri, and Megan (above) all hold special significance as they pay homage to female resilience and determination.
Q Tell us about a favorite recent purchase.
A After miles of walking in Manhattan in uncomfortable shoes, I purchased these Coclico “Hop” boots in “Caramello” and am in love—comfort meets style, easy to put on, and the leather wears beautifully.
Q What spring styles are you looking forward to incorporating into your wardrobe?
A I can’t wait to wear my newly created high-low skirt patterned from my original painting titled Marsh Song (above). It was designed and created by local fashion icon Heather Johnson of Pattern House. She created our sample collection, and her work is outstanding. It took my breath away when I tried it on.
Q How do you describe your style aesthetic?
A I love a high waist, a ruffle, a capped sleeve, a corset, and soft leathers. Don’t ask me how many floral prints I have in my closet. My best friend says I’m a walking garden. One of my favorite floral dresses is by Ulla Johnson, similar to this “Lyria” style available at Hampden (above).
