When it comes to boxed wines, don’t expect rich, first-growth flavor—that’s not what they’re made for. Instead, think convenience, portability, and a smaller environmental footprint. Try packing these varieties on your next outdoor adventure

Black Box Pinot Grigio 2007 (Delle Venezie, Italy), $22: Black Box’s three-liter package equals four bottles of wine, or about 20 glasses. Apple and pear notes mark this quaffable pinot grigio. Chill the box for refreshment on your boat or at a picnic!

Yellow+Blue Torrontes 2008 (Argentina), $12: Y+B has taken a different approach to box wines, creating one-liter cartons using the same Tetra Pak technology as fruit juices and soups. Look for honeysuckle, floral, and citrus aromas with a fresh and lively taste.

Red Truck Mini-Barrel Red 2007 (California), $30: This clever, three-liter container has received a lot of attention. A blend of as many as five grapes (mostly Rhône) from Central Coast vineyards, Red Truck is multifaceted and spicy.

La Vieille Ferme Rouge 2007 (Côtes du Ventoux, France), $22: Grenache, syrah, and carignan grapes produce ripe red fruit overtones in this three-liter box. La Vieille Ferme wines are also available in 750 ml bottles, if you want to sample first.

Powers Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (Washington State), $22: Powers cabernet sauvignon wines are known for delivering rich mouthfeel and cabernet flavors of dark cherries, plum, and even cocoa. This one is also available in 750s.
