The original pier stretched 1,000 feet into the sea
Upon its construction in 1953, the Isle of Palms Pier was touted as the longest structure of its kind in the Carolinas, stretching 1,000 feet into the sea. In the coming years, as the island developed into a bustling beach community, the pier became a hot spot for fishermen and tourists looking to take in the scenery, as seen in this circa-1960s image. After Hurricane Hugo struck the South Carolina coast and destroyed most of the pier’s original pilings in September 1989, the structure was rebuilt. Today, the pier is privately owned and only accessible to renters at the Sea Cabins and Oceanside Villas.
