Cheers to Spoleto

Cheers to Spoleto
May 2015
Cheers to Spoleto Spoleto-goers looking to toast the arts should consider raising a glass from Umbria, the countryside surrounding the fest’s namesake Italian town. “The wines date back to the Roman era and deliver high quality at a good value,” notes Beth Anne Crane, owner of Muse restaurant and wine bar. Here, three of her favorite picks

Under $25
Rocca delle Macìe Orvieto Classico, 2012, Umbria, Italy
“By law, Orvieto must contain at least 50 percent trebbiano grapes. This winery blends verdello, Greccheto, drupeggio, and malvasia with the trebbiano to create an elegant and crisp white with a hint of almond. It’s a lovely aperitif that’s best enjoyed with risottos, salads, and light fish dishes.” Available at Crushed Fine Wines, $23

Under $50
Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso, 2012, Umbria, Italy
“The Caprai family is revered for championing sustainability within the Italian wine industry. This pour, made predominantly from sangiovese grapes, is dry to medium-bodied in fruit and texture and offers a hint of vanilla. It pairs well with aged cheeses and charcuterie or white meats.” Available by the bottle at Muse, $47

$50 and Up
Paolo Bea Rosso de Véo, 2008, Umbria, Italy
“This is a beautiful blend of sagrantino grapes sourced from Paolo Bea’s youngest vineyards. Organic and biodynamic, the wine’s flavor and texture speaks the language of the land with leather, black olive, and dried berry aromas and a balsam of herb on the finish. This wine is not for the faint of heart and makes a delightful pairing with lamb and richer dishes.” Available at Bottles, $55
