Based on a children’s book written by schoolteacher Barbara Robinson in 1971, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever tells the story of the Herdmans: six kids notorious for causing mischief in their small town. When they hear that the local Sunday school offers snacks, they head down to church and end up scoring lead roles in the holiday Pageant. Knowing the family’s reputation, townspeople expect the show to be a disaster, but the Herdmans bring a realism to their performance, leaving the audience awed in this heartwarming play. Dock Street Theater, 135 Church St. Saturday, 10am. $31. (843)577-7183, www.charlestonstage.com
