Lived-in Luxe - Alison and Parker Green’s century-old home holds an eclectic mix of fab and functional furnishings in lieu of highbrow antiques—a perfect fit for a young family of four
The Colonial Street property is just blocks away from where homeowner Parker Green grew up. “My kids love to walk over to Burbage’s, which I used to do when I was their age,” he says.
In the vibrant playroom, comfy, kid-friendly furniture—like the Serena & Lily hanging chair and Lee Industries pullout sofa outfitted in performance fabric—mix with playful décor, including a vintage textile interior designer Melissa Lenox found in Jodhpur, India, and Lulie Wallace’s “Meyers” wallpaper.
BOLD STROKES - Stay-at-home mom Alison—who studied fashion at the Art Institute of Charleston and worked in retail for years—craved a “fun, glamorous, and definitely not too serious” design, says Lenox. In the light-filled living room, a mid-century modern sofa from Room and Board is glammed up by Scalamandré leopard print and Jonathan Adler blue velvet pillows.
An original painting by Bradley Theodore is the crown jewel of the room.
SMALL BUT MIGHTY - “It’s a tiny, under-the-stairs powder room so I knew we had to go big in there,” says Lenox. She covered the walls and ceiling with Kelly Wearstler’s “Channels” wallpaper and painted the door, trim, and casings a glossy black to up the wow factor. A mini sink from Ferguson and gilt mirror from CB2 polish off the practical, petite space.
HAPPY DAYS - The third floor houses Honor and Finn’s rooms and their cheerful bath. “I feel like we did a good job at giving these a magical feeling, a place for them to be little kids,” says Parker. Playful wallpaper—Sissy+Marley’s “Lucky Star” for her
Sandberg Wallpaper UK’s “Collette” for him—helps, as do built-ins rife with books and toys.
Shiplap walls, penny-tile floors, simple towel hooks, and a trough sink make for a splash-safe (and stylish) backdrop to bath time.
SWEET DREAMS - Alison’s mom visits often from Oklahoma, so a restful guest room was on the couple’s wish list. A metal spindle bed from Celadon, crisp white bed linens, and a vintage bedside table—all layered against House of Hackney’s “London Rose”-papered walls—delivers with aplomb.
CLEAN & SERENE: The master suite rivals boutique hotels for its comfort and style. A space-saving “wet room” configuration in the bath fits a walk-in shower and soaking tub, while glistening white-tile walls, cabinets covered in Benjamin Moore’s “Black Beauty,” and a custom-cut marble tile floor add drama.
In the bedroom, sleek furnishings (like the bed and side tables from One Kings Lane, pillows and lamps from Fritz Porter, and brass chandelier by Visual Comfort from Circa) are clean-lined and serene. In lieu of a walk-in closet—which was sacrificed for a larger playroom—wall-to-wall built-ins provide plenty of storage.
LIGHT & BRIGHT: “The kitchen is a good example of what Melissa did so well, filling every nook and cranny and making them useful in some way,” says Alison. Fireclay backsplash and gold pendants and sconces add glamour to the utilitarian space.
The luxe theme flows into the adjoining dining room thanks to velvet-covered chairs from Anthropologie and a Robert Abbey chandelier.
SURE-FOOTED: The team took great care to restore the existing handrail and spindles of the winding staircase. Thanks to a neutral-hued animal-print runner, socked feet and pups’ paws are padded from floor to floor.
