MOJA Arts Festival

Under the direction of musician Charlton Singleton, the MOJA Arts Festival is marking its 40th anniversary celebrating the Holy City’s African American and Caribbean culture with an impressive lineup that includes many performers with local ties. The festival kicks off Friday with a jazz concert at Dock Street Theatre featuring trumpeter Willie Bradley and up-and-coming trombonist Hank Bilal. The music continues Saturday during Gospel at the Gaillard with Summerville’s Kelontae Gavin (top right), Spartanburg’s Tasha Cobbs Leonard (top left), and Mike Brown and F.O.C.U.S. In October, look for a conversation between Singleton and Osei Chandler, local host of South Carolina Public Radio’s Roots Musik Karamu since the 1970s; a comedy set by Marlon Wayans; and the finale at Hampton Park. Days, times, & venues vary. Prices vary. (843) 724-7305, www.mojafestival.com
