While his father founded the Jenkins Orphanage Band, Edmund Thornton Jenkins was one of the first composers to incorporate music of the Black South with the concert traditions of Europe. His works reference African spirituals and tunes sung by Mosquito Fleet fishermen on the docks of Charleston Harbor. For the concert, the Colour of Music Festival Orchestra plays Jenkins’s Negro Symphony, A Prayer; Clarinet Concerto; and Charlestonia: A Folk Rhapsody. Gaillard Center, 95 Calhoun St. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. $76-$40. (843) 242-3094, www.gaillardcenter.org
