FINDING FREEDOM: THE JOURNEY OF ROBERT SMALLS

The Charleston Gaillard Center debuts its first theatrical production, based on the life of South Carolina native Robert Smalls and featuring original music composed by local musician Charlton Singleton. Born enslaved on the McKee Plantation in Beaufort, Smalls changed the course of history on May 13, 1862 when he seized the Confederate CSS Planter and steered it into the Union blockade off the coast of Charleston Harbor.
