HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: “This one is simple—because it’s home,” says Mount Pleasant native Carrie of why they chose to hold their wedding in the Lowcountry. “My Southern roots run deep.”
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY: Guests were greeted with a laundry basket (foldable and tagged with a welcome note by Blue Cole Press) filled with must-haves for Edisto Island—beach toys, flip-flops, floats, and sunscreen.
HOLY GROUND: “The Presbyterian Church on Edisto was a nod to our connection with (and appreciation of) the history on the island,” says Carrie. “It’s so beautiful we didn’t need to spruce it up.”
HAPPY DESTINY: The couple, who wed on a sea island rife with dirt roads, wore Ulla-Maija from Maddison Row (her) and J.Crew (him).
HEART AND SOLES: For the ceremony, Carrie wore gold Kate Spade heels from Copper Penny. Self-admittedly not much of a heels girl, she changed into a pair of London Sole ballet flats for the reception. “I was happy to give my feet a reprieve and boogie the night away in cute flats!” says the bride.
THE PERFECT TOUCH: Jewelry from her stepmother’s side of the family fit the bill for the bride’s “something borrowed.” Carrie says she loved how the pieces fit in with the evening’s vintage vibe.
NOTE FOR NOTE: Carrie and Jonny wrote notes for each other to read before the wedding.
ONE-ON-ONE: “Even though I was surrounded by all the bridesmaids, I felt like it was just me and him getting ready to make the most important promises to each other that we ever would,” says Carrie of reading Jonny’s note to her.
PRIVACY, PLEASE: “No one else was around; just the two of us,” says Carrie of reading Jonny’s note while getting ready with her bridesmaids.
SHADES OF GRAY: “I was somewhat obsessed with incorporating gray,” says Carrie of the groomsmen’s J.Crew suits and the bridesmaids’ Melissa Sweet dresses from Bella Bridesmaid. Yellow bouquets and boutonnieres tied the looks to the rest of the wedding’s colors.
QUITE A HANDFUL: For the countryside wedding (with a Southern accent), Out of Hand married unpretentious blooms like chamomile, peonies, runuculus, roses, and Billy Balls with greens like geranium leaves and ferns. To finish, they wrapped the bundle in burlap and cotton lace, and pinned it with a mother-of-pearl button.
MARK OF A GENTLEMAN: Out of Hand made boutonnieres of Billy Balls, daisies, and greens.
GIRLFRIENDS: “We hung out at my family’s beach house drinking coffee while we got our nails done,” says Carrie of her wedding morning.
GET THE LOOK: “It was important for me to look like myself,” Carrie says of her styling for the day. “I didn’t want to be overly made up and stayed with a natural look since I was surrounded by such beauty, both in our surroundings on the breathtaking island and by our lovely family and friends.”
HIGH TIME: Jonny and the groomsmen sported bow ties from High Cotton Ties.
JUDGING A BOY BY HIS COVER: Carrie says when she first saw Jonny, she thought he looked like he came straight from an advertisement for REI, an outdoor sports outfitter. Her impression proved to be spot on—Jonny was working for the store at the time and had actually just gotten off his shift.
A TISKET, A TASKET: A sweetgrass basket added a local touch to the programs.
SURE THING: “As we said our vows, we squeezed each other’s hands with all our might,” says Carrie.
OPENING SHOW: Carrie and Jonny rented an old movie sign to direct guests to the wedding and played off of the name of their wedding website: CarrieMarriesJonny.com.
SIGNATURE COCKTAIL: Carrie’s father and Jonny concocted their “Front Porch Drink,” a mix of Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, lemonade, and mint simple syrup.
JUMP BACK: Ooh! Events filled vintage vessels with chamomile, dill, fern fronds, green hydrangea, and yellow roses.
SNAPSHOT: Each table featured a portrait of the couple.
COLORFUL STORY: Carrie spotted her dream palette of yellow, gray, and blue in a wedding magazine, so Jonny contacted the featured couple to get their Pantone colors. The rented chairs were custom-painted to suit her vision.
STACK ’EM HIGH: Mix-and-match patterned china lent a casual air to the reception.
IN TRUE FORM: “We could see in our mind’s eye what we wanted the reception to look like, and we could find pictures that captured small pieces of what we wanted, but they did a great job of taking our ideas and vision and turning it in to a beautiful event,” says the bride of Out of Hand.
WHAT A SPREAD: Southern Affairs Catering lived up to its regional name, serving fried calamari with pepperoncini tarter sauce, filo cups with smoked salad, bacon wrapped scallops, a sauté station of jump lump crab cakes with hollandaise sauce, and more.
PICTURE THIS: Wooden-framed engagement photos of the couple—which were taken there on Edisto Island—were used as décor throughout the reception.
RUSTIC CHIC: Wooden accents and antique books gave the tables a vintage vibe. “We’re fans of eclectic, vintage, one-of-a-kind finds,” says Carrie.
INDOOR-OUTDOOR: Out of Hand married natural touches like moss and straw met with tarnished silver and Mason jar vessels.
MIXED AND MATCHED: Rather than competing with their bright vessels, the fern fronds, green hydrangea, and yellow peonies of the arrangements complemented the colorful vases.
SIMPLE SOLUTIONS: Clear tincture bottles held Billy Balls, daisies, and lamb’s ears.
ALL TOGETHER NOW: While the same elements were used on each, décor varied slightly from table to table, allowing for a cohesive yet informal feel.
HAVE A BITE: Columbia-based bakery Sweet Reba’s made cake pops and cupcakes—like red velvet, strawberry, triple chocolate cookie dough, triple chocolate peanut butter, and salted caramel chocolate ganache.
CHARMING CHEWS: Sweet Reba’s topped the flavored cupcakes with fresh strawberries. The leafy garnishes and bird-topped stone stand gave the setup a secret garden feel.
I’LL TAKE IT TO GO: “We ordered small brown to-go boxes and customized them with ‘Carrie Married Jonny’ stickers. People could take home a slice of our tasty wedding cake or cupcakes,” says Carrie of the dessert spread.
SWEET TOOTH: Besides having Charleston’s Magnolia Wedding Cakes make a traditional cake, Carrie had Columbia-based bakery Sweet Reba’s make cake pops and cupcakes in flavors like red velvet, strawberry, cookie dough, chocolate peanut butter, salted caramel, and chocolate ganache. Guest took the bite-sized treats home in boxes adorned with “Carrie Married Jonny” stickers.
EASY ACCESSORIES: The couple’s four-tiered, white patterned confection from Magnolia Wedding Cakes was crowned with two yellow peonies and stood atop a simple but sturdy wooden stand.
SET THE MOOD: The first decision Carrie and Jonny made in terms of vendors? The band. They reached out to the Mighty Kicks the day after they got engaged. “We knew they would set the tone for an amazing party, and they exceeded our expectations,” says the bride.
