“JAPONISME IN CHARLESTON: ALICE SMITH & HER CIRCLE”

Early 20th century Charleston artist Alice Ravenel Huger Smith was one of many American artists inspired by late 19th century Japanese design, engaging in Japonisme, a French term describing the widespread fascination with and reproduction of Japanese prints.
