Early 20th century Charleston artist Alice Ravenel Huger Smith was one of many American artists inspired by late 19th century Japanese design, engaging in Japonisme, a French term describing the widespread fascination with and reproduction of Japanese prints. Featured works at this Gibbes Museum of Art exhibit delve into a deep respect for nature through watercolor techniques, depicting Western scenes from Smith and other artists who embraced the tenets and techniques of Japanese art.
