Alabama native Butch Anthony brings his wit, originality, and talent to the Halsey this month through his assemblage and installation artwork. A self-proclaimed “artist, picker, and builder of things,” Anthony’s creations comprised of objects collected from his home state. Past projects include “The Museum of Wonder,” which contains antiques and curiosities (including the world’s largest gallstone). Through these discarded and forgotten objects, Anthony critiques the rapid consumerism of our society. Come see pieces—such as X-ray-like skeletons painted over vintage portraits—and learn how Anthony turns trash into treasure. Catch the opening reception for this exhibit at 6:30pm on January 17. Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, 161 Calhoun St., Charleston. Monday-Saturday 11am-4pm; Thursdays 11am-7pm. Free. (843)953-4422, www.halsey.cofc.edu
