Learn about owner Nancy Terebecki-Smith’s in-home myth-busting services
Nancy Terebecki-Smith opened Rooted in Charleston on Ashley Ave.
Step aboard Nancy Terebecki-Smith’s bus, often found parked alongside local art vendors and food trucks, and discover a verdant haven for plant people of all varieties.
Growing up with a green-thumbed grandmother and entrepreneurial father, Terebecki-Smith “never looked back” after she fell in love with a bus she saw for sale on Instagram in 2022 and founded Rooted in Charleston. “I put plants in there and took off,” she laughs. “I loved the idea of being mobile so I could be more inclusive and reach people who might not walk into a plant store.”
“Greenie” the bus began making appearances at events such as Thrifters & Drifters and the Pickers Hullabaloo Flea Market, attracting horticulturists and beginners alike with offerings ranging from rare monsteras to low-maintenance cacti. In August 2024, Terebecki-Smith opened a brick-and-mortar at the corner of Ashley Avenue and Spring Street, creating an oasis stocked with plants, garden supplies, and handmade products from women-owned businesses. “I took the alternate route first and proved I could run a successful business out of a bus,” she says. “I liked the new challenge of doing it from a store.”
As interest has grown, Terebecki-Smith has expanded her services, offering free local delivery with any $50 purchase, as well as in-home “myth-busting” consultations. “I love the education part of it, interacting with customers and answering their questions,” she says. “Sometimes people just need some extra guidance. I’ll tell them to move things, not to water something so much, little intuitive tweaks.” Find her products and Greenie’s schedule at plantbuscharleston.com.
