“DEPTH OF FIELD: WILLIAM EGGLESTON”

William Eggleston earned his title as the father of American color photography for strongly advocating for the medium’s legitimacy during its development. Eggleston began photographing the world around him in the 1950s in black-and-white and became one of the first fine art photographers to use color, capturing vivid images of billboards, storefronts, diners, and other ordinary artifacts in striking detail. Guests will learn more about Eggleston with Simon Constantine, a professor of art history at Birkbeck University of London and a contributor to the Gibbes exhibition. “Depth of Field” is an ongoing lecture series honoring men and women who defined photography in the 20th century. Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St. Thursday, 1-2pm. $15-$5.
