Whimsy and elegance cozy up in this downtown ode to English charm

Designer Roberta Ketchin discovered the arched garden gate in England.
A ship-shaped chandelier anchors the foyer’s nautical theme.

Ketchin chose the soothing bedroom palette to complement the moody landscape painting—one of her favorites.
“Mirrors change the perspective and shift light and dimension,” says Roberta of one of her favorite design tools. Seen reflected here, the master bed is a Baker antique from the 1930s or ’40s.
The designer transformed what was formerly an “almost creepy” dining room with dark woodwork and covered windows into a comfortable, elegant, and airy space. The pair of diamond-paned French doors add cottage detail and invite visitors through to the back of the house, while the custom chandelier gracefully balances the room’s suspended arch. Gilded figurehead sconces add a touch of sophisticated whimsy.
Roberta worked within the kitchen’s existing footprint, brightening the cozy space with cheery butter-yellow hues and one of her trademark chandeliers.
Roberta fell for the whimsical cottage character of this 4,800-square-foot house, which boasts diamond windows that filter ample light into the living spaces.
“We love having visitors,” says Roberta, who treats her guests to rich fabrics, cozy places to sit, and good reading light. “And wonderful draperies are essential.”
