See displays of dolls, quilts, and wall hangings curated by local artist Torreah “Cookie” Washington as part of the 14th annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition. The Brookgreen Gardens’s Lowcountry Center Auditorium displays pieces from 23 local artists interpreting the theme of Sankofa, a symbol originating from the Akan tribe of Ghana which often appears as a bird turning its head to place an egg on its back, or as an ornate heart-shaped design. Sankofa symbols are associated with the proverb to “reach back and get it,” encouraging growth and learning from past mistakes. Brookgreen Gardens, 1931 Brookgreen Garden Dr., Murrells Inlet.
