The Gibbes Museum’s “Film in Focus” series, celebrating the Southern Gothic in American cinema, continues this month with Daughters of the Dust, directed by Julie Dash. The 1991 film is the first feature length film directed by an African American woman distributed theatrically in the United States. Set on Saint Helena Island, it explores the struggle of a multi-generational Gullah family to stay true to their roots at the turn of the 20th century. This special in-person screening will have limited capacity. Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St. Thursday, 6-8pm. $5-$10. (843)722-2706, www.gibbesmuseum.org
