Mossman’s Hatch Cove Designs has evolved into a full-service creative and art studio

Markey Mossman

“Yep, I can write on that,” the calligrapher often tells customers. Mossman’s Hatch Cove Designs began as a calligraphy studio for other stationers and has evolved to become a full-service creative and art studio, offering wedding and event invitations, menus, and other branded items, as well as marketing materials for businesses. The College of Charleston graduate recently painted prints for a collection of Beau & Ro dresses and jute bags for a brand marketing launch. But, during the summer, the artist is careful to limit her business commitments so she can spend time with her three young children. Here, Mossman shares what she’s packing in her beach bag.

Q: What are your favorite local brands? Tell us about a recent purchase.

A: We are so lucky to live in a place where we can support so many local shops and brands, many of whom are good friends. For clothes and accessories, I love Beau & Ro and Nette. My favorite local jewelry brands are Hart, Dee Ruel, Theodosia, and Storied by Tori. Last spring, I purchased a gemstone and shell necklace from Storied by Tori (below) and love that she used a Sullivan’s Island shell as the main charm. I buy children’s birthday presents at Artist & Craftsman Supply, such a hidden gem.

Q: What’s in your beach bag?

A: As any veteran mama would know, lots of snacks! I fill my Woda bag (below left) with White Leaf Provisions applesauce pouches (left), New Primal meat sticks, That’s It fruit bars, and Pirate’s Booty. For myself, maybe a Bevi Bene Co. kombucha. Other than that, our trusted Supergoop sunscreen, striped Target towels, and this new beach read by local author Chassity Evans (below).

Q: What are your plans for the Fourth of July, and what will you wear?

A: We hope to be in Maine for the Fourth of July. I painted a striped red pattern as part of a recent collection with Beau & Ro that would be perfect for the holiday (below).

Q: Any summer travel plans? What are you packing?

A: We have a local beach week planned with my parents, brothers, and their families; a New England trip in early July; and a large family reunion in the Tennessee mountains. With three young children, comfort and practicality are the most important factors when packing. This Minnow scalloped cover-up (below) is perfect and can double as a casual day dress with sandals.
