Fireworks burst overhead as crowds gathered for the grand opening of Folly Beach’s new boardwalk in this photo taken in July 1960. After the original Folly Pier was lost to a fire in 1957, the 1,700-foot Ocean Plaza Boardwalk and an improved pier were constructed, enticing beachgoers with more than a dozen amusement park rides, concession stands, and a roller skating rink. Another fire claimed the structures in early 1977, and it would be 18 years until Charleston County Parks bought the beachfront property and built the 1,045-foot-long Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier. In 2022, the structure underwent additional renovations, including the replacement of wood pilings with concrete supports, offering unobstructed ocean views and additional space for pedestrians and fishing.
