In 2016, Colson Whitehead won a Pulitzer Prize in fiction, a National Book Award, and a spot on loads of “best books of the year” lists with The Underground Railroad. The novel tells of two slaves, Caesar and Cora, attempting to escape their bondage via a real railroad that chugs below ground, complete with conductors.
