CHARLESTON JAZZ FESTIVAL

With a rich history of, and a modern love for, jazz music, Charleston is an apt setting for this annual weekend celebration. Now in its sixth year, the festivities start Thursday with performances by local bands—expect back-to-back concerts from Offramp, Cameron & the Saltwater Brass, and the Lee Barbour Quartet featuring Justin Stanton (of Snarky Puppy). Jazz violinist and MacArthur “Genius” grant-winner Regina Carter takes the Charleston Music Hall stage on Friday to showcase her signature style—a blend of Afro-Cuban jazz, swing, bebop, and folk sounds. The festival continues Saturday with performances by Jamaica-born, Grammy nominee Monty Alexander; as well as the Charleston Jazz Orchestra accompanied by Jane Monheit; and Freddy Cole, the brother of Nat King Cole who stands on his own with his 60-plus year career. On Sunday, the festival comes to a close with Family Jazz Day. Locations vary. Thursday, 6pm, 7:30pm, & 9pm; Friday, 7:30pm, Saturday, 7:30pm; Sunday, 3-6pm. $128-$25.
