Bright Star

For the first time in the Holy City, Charleston Stage’s latest production is this bluegrass-infused Broadway musical created by comedic legend Steve Martin and acclaimed singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. Taking place in the early 20th century in Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, the story follows the life of a woman named Alice from her young and carefree days to 22 years later when she is a magazine editor. Her story is mysteriously interwoven with that of a young man named Billy, and over the course of the play, the two discover a hidden connection. The music of the production has been nominated for a Grammy and multiple Tony awards, and The New York Times has praised its compositions, saying, “The shining achievement of the musical is its winsome country and bluegrass score.” Dock Street Theatre, 135 Church St. Thursday-Saturday, 7:30pm; Sunday, 3pm. $71-$34; $71-$32 senior; $71-$29 student & active military.
