Helpful wedding news from around town

WRITTEN BY Melissa Bigner

Maybe it’s because it’s the day after a holiday and my attention is hopping here and there, like a popping popcorn kernel, but it seems the perfect time for a lot of little bridal tidbits. Easy read? You bet. Priceless info? You got it…

Tied Up
Check out K. Cooper Ray’s Brooks Brother coup: The reversible bow tie. Perfect for Lowcountry groom and his fellows, these ties update neckwear for Southern gents in the most tongue-in-chic way. Check out for the ties, and let newfound Charlestonian Cooper guide you and your betrothed through the trickier aspects of etiquette via his priceless blog. One more winning debut? This August, be on the hunt for the shrimp and grits tie from Peter-Blair Ltd.. Available in a number of color pairings, we dig them big-time! Local retailer Grady Ervin & Co. carries an array of the brand’s other patterns, and the company’s website shares other regional location, plus stocks scores more patterns, from oyster roast themes to shotgun shells, even. Trust us, they are worth a look.

Once Wed
There are heaps of great sample sales and gown discounts going on this June (see our Bridal Blog for a listing), but if you’re looking for year-round deals and steals, think about shopping the two couture consignment gown boutiques in the area. Fabulous Frocks sits demurely on Spring Street, and features serious markdowns from the couture gowns of its sister store, Belle Couture Bridal. Check out their website for a teaser gallery of available “frocks,” and expect designers from Carolina Herrera to Melissa Sweet and Monique Lhuillier. Mmmmmmm. Summerville sports a smaller version of a consignment shop inside OK Florists there on West Luke Avenue in the super-cute downtown area. Dubbed White House Bridal, their dreamy gowns are no more than five years old in order to stay “au currant” and are also showcased on the group’s website. Love some help for the discerning recessionista bride!

Cynthia Rowley Event Corrections!
The times they are a’changin’…a few updates since we last told you about the sweet soiree launch of Cynthia Rowley’s bridesmaid line at the stylish floral shop stems, on the corner of Cannon and Coming streets downtown. Yes, The Canapé is still serving treats, models are still wandering about in the seriously pretty, colorful, and innovative—thank goodness!—dresses, and Southern Protocol event mavens are still dressing up the place in garden-party trimmings. We’ll still be there to give away free copies of the magazine, a pair of tickets to the Charleston Weddings Spring Bridal Show, and an hour’s wedding consultation with the editor (that’s me, Melissa Bigner!). But now? It’s moved to Tuesday, June 8, from 4-6:30 p.m. And we now know that Bella Bridesmaids will carry line. Plus? The hostesses would like folks to RSVP at or by calling Cynthia’s King Street store at (843) 577-8013.

Pretty New Site
Awww! Check out the lovely new site that WED has created. Love the blog, the galleries, the new logo, and that prettily patterned border. Great color combo…hmmm. Someone should use that for a wedding palette! Stop by for a peek and give the ladies a bravo. And know of other Lowcountry vendors with similar news—new releases, new sites, new owners, new sales, steals, deals, etc.? Drop me a note!
