Clay Settle & Tory Shepherd

August 4, 2012

When Moncks Corner native Tory was introduced to Inman, South Carolina, native Clay, “It was love at first sight,” she says. Following that first day together, which included talking for hours and even roasting marshmallows at one point, the pair began dating long distance while Tory continued her studies at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and Clay followed suit at The Citadel. Though Tory made many trips to Charleston throughout their year-and-a-half courtship, one visit in particular turned out to be especially memorable. After spending the morning kayaking through the Charleston Harbor, the couple fancied up for what Clay said would be an evening out with friends. While waiting for said friends to finish with a meeting, Clay suggested he and Tory visit Lowndes Grove Plantation—his favorite place in Charleston to jog by. There, overlooking the Ashley River, Clay proposed while his aunt snapped photos from a hiding spot. After she congratulated the duo, they took a rickshaw to dinner at Peninsula Grill, and then celebrated with friends. The couple, who lives in Greenville, South Carolina, will exchange vows at the Lewisfield Plantation in Moncks Corner in June of 2014.
