We give up a lot of freedoms in the name of progress. It wasn’t all that long ago that you could drive your car down the beach (or ride your horse) and salute your personal firework display with the libation of your choosing. Of course, Charleston’s population growth means that a lawless beach in 2013 would lead to litter, riots, and general mayhem…or would it?

Folly Beach made a lot of news last year when it joined Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island by banning drinking on the beach, sparking plenty of conversation about which laws are worthwhile and which ones just make it more difficult to have a good time. Tell us what you think:

Although Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island have off-leash dog hours, Folly Beach never allows dogs off-leash. Should pooches be allowed to run free on the beach?

Arf. Let them chase a ball

Even after 50 years in Charleston, surfing seems to still be growing in popularity. Where should it be allowed?

Wherever the waves are!

Current laws governing surfing (in general, stay away from piers and swimmers) are adequate.

The beaches should tighten up restrictions on where surfing is allowed.

Surfers are a nuisance and should be banned.

Once commonplace, campfires are no longer allowed on Charleston’s beaches. Should they be?

What about fireworks?

Burn, baby burn.

People already light fireworks on holidays and they are legal to buy in South Carolina, so they should be allowed with some regulations about when, where, and how.

Now that booze is banned from the beach on Folly, are you more or less likely to visit this summer?

More likely

I’ve always put my drink in a cup and I don’t plan to change that.

I won’t be visiting Folly anymore.

Parking regulations can be tricky to remember at the different beaches. What do you think of the current rules?

Parking tickets are an important part of beach communities’ revenue. These communities are inundated with guests during summer and should be able to collect money however they can.

Regulations like “Get all four wheels off the pavement” should be clearly posted at every intersection if the police are going to issue tickets for violating them.

I rarely visit the beaches because parking is such a hassle.

The ocean is constantly eating away at parts of Folly Beach and Isle of Palms. What actions should homeowners be allowed to take to protect their property?

Whatever it takes, from sandbags to rocks.

Each case should be reviewed individually, but in some cases a seawall, groin, or rocks are appropriate.

They need to wait for renourishment. Dumping rocks and building walls in the sand are ruining the beach for everyone.

People should never have built and bought there in the first place. Let nature take its course.
