Joe Quinn is a college student at the College of Charleston, marketing intern for Charleston Fashion Week and known for being involved with at least half a dozen projects around town so it should come as no surprise that he is a power house when it comes to bringing a small creative idea to fruition! Many can say they have love for Lady GaGa but who can say they have a city approved tribute event to this fearlessly fashionable superstar? Yes, Joe can! It was last January that It's GaGa Day in the Square took place in Marion Square for a mere 30 minutes! Five College of Charleston students, Joe Quinn, Grace Younger, Sara Gimble, Mikayla Carr and Raena Shirali set out via facebook to invite a bunch of their friends to celebrate the fierceness that is GaGa for a fun little party in the park! Once they noticed they had over 1,000 confirmed they realized that this was a full fledged event leading them to find sponsors and a partnership with the American Red Cross raise money for the Haiti Relief Fund. Then came the t-shirts which at 400 made, sold out in a matter of 30 minutes taking their total money raised to more than $3,000! Now that's fashion with a purpose!
With all of this success what could top this moment? 11 months after the event, the book GAGA by Johnny Morgan featured in a two page spread a picture taken from none other than It's GaGa Day in the Square! Joe recalls, "When I walked into Barnes & Noble to buy the book it was surreal to think that I could go to any Barnes and Noble and buy it, and that a snapshot from a 30 minute Lady GaGa dance party in Charleston is now being seen nationwide."
Kudos, to all the "little monsters" right here in Charleston!
Don't miss the next GaGa Day at Joseph P. Riley Park (Riverdogs Stadium)! There will be giveaways, contests, prizes and of course dancing! When asked about the new location Joe explains, "During my meeting with the city the idea was brought up to have the next GaGa day at Joe Riley Park. The thought to have it at the Joe honestly never crossed my mind, so when I heard that they were on board and excited to host it I was ecstatic! I'm not sure how many baseball parks have hosted a Gaga-themed dance party on their fields, but I'm pretty confident that this will be another first for Charleston. Even if you don't like Lady GaGa's music, you can still come and have an awesome time dancing on a baseball field while raising money for a great cause!" This time around expect a great sound system with videos and the works! Don't forget the most glam detail- they are bringing a charity on board and again will be raising money through t-shirt sales and donations! See you there- January 22nd from 5pm to 7pm!
