New Moon

Ida Becker

From the new moon presently slung low over the Holy City to the angst-ridden teenagers who will overtake the Hippodrome for the premiere of Twilight: New Moon this weekend, moon madness abound. On Friday, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art hosted its fifth annual membership party. The theme? New Moon: New Museum.

With a dynamic new website, incredible new gallery space, and eye-popping current exhibition, the Halsey is riding high on its own deserved buzz. Several weeks ago, director Mark Sloan welcomed the public to the official opening of both The Marion and Wayland H. Cato Center for the Arts and its debut exhibition—the first major retrospective of the collage and assemblage artist Aldwyth. A banner crowd turned out to celebrate what Sloan dubbed a "Hallelujah" moment, the culmination of many long years of planning and construction.

Many of the same faces who helped christen the opening reappeared this past week for the jazzy membership drive. A bevy of beauties were posted by both entrances—Kenton Barham on one side and Leah Greenberg with Lynn Letson on the other, which made it difficult for guests to say no to the membership plea.

Inside, the Garage Cuban Band performed from a cubby space, while noted photographer Squire Fox snapped guests in front of a funky crescent moon painted by David Boatwright. Check out his shots here: http://web.sendtoprint.net/proofbook/login.asp
