Music and Oysters for Wildlife

A sizable crowd turned out for SEWEE Association's annual oyster roast, which featured all-you-can-eat Bulls Bay oysters, Glenn Bagley's BBQ, and live music from some of Charleston's finest.

Oyster roasts abound this time of year, to the delight of most Charlestonians, and many veteran shuckers happily trekked out to Awendaw for the 7th annual Music and Oysters for Wildlife, benefiting the SEWEE Association. The laid-back fete has developed a loyal following, and this year’s returning partygoers were joined by many fresh faces at the oyster tables.

Steam rose from the tables as the heaps of fresh oysters were hurriedly spilled out to replace the ever mounting pile of shells, and people of all ages vied for position and the choicest oysters. “Keep an eye on that little one,” one guest joked of his daughter. “She can eat twice her weight in oysters!”

Those seeking heartier fare followed their noses to the smell of Glenn Bagley's BBQ, and many guests grabbed an adult beverage before kicking back and enjoying live music from Occasional Milkshake with Mark Bryan, Hank Futch, Doug Jones, Danielle Howle, Red Dog Ramblers, Ed Hunnicutt, and Clay Rice.

The laid-back Lowcountry afternoon benefited the South Eastern Wildlife and Environment Education Association (SEWEE Association), a Friend's Group for the National Wildlife Refuges and National Forest of coastal South Carolina. SEWEE works with federal partners, and has supported the Endangered Red Wolf and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting projects of Cape Romain NWR for over 10 years.
