The Charleston Men's Chorus presented a wonderful performance of Christmas carols and religious hymns at the Sottile Theater on Sunday, December 11.

Those who attended the Charleston Men’s Chorus Christmas at the Sottile found themselves in awe of the power of the human voice. The all-male group was accompanied by pianist Pamela Nelson and mezzo soprano Jennifer Luiken, and a hush fell over the packed house at historic Sottile Theater as the gentlemen filed on stage.

The chorus started with a beautiful performance of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel before moving on to Ave Maria and Lux Aurumque. Attendees found themselves spellbound until the lights came up for the brief intermission, when the theater erupted in both applause and conversation.

The second set featured such highlights as Star of Wonder, Do You Hear What I Hear, and O Holy Night, and the Charleston Men’s Chorus received thunderous applause as the afternoon’s performance drew to a close. Guests gradually filed into the lobby, abuzz with excitement and holiday cheer.

The Charleston Men’s Chorus was founded in 1990 by Alfred Pinckney and his fellow Rotarians, and today the non-profit boasts around 70 members. Maestro Lon Shull has been conducting the Charleston Men’s Chorus since 1993, and starting in 2000, the Chorus has held their annual spring concert as a fundraiser for music scholarships at local colleges.
