The first Charleston Marathon took place on Saturday, January 15.

People have been buzzing about the debut of the Charleston Marathon, and Saturday’s race was not a disappointment. The morning kicked off with chilly but beautiful weather, and a large crowd of warmly dressed competitors and supporters flocked to the lawn of the Gaillard Auditorium for the start of the race.

The Charleston Marathon offered runners the options of 5K, 10K, and half and full marathon routes, as well as a riverfront festival featuring live music, shrimp and grits, beer, and shopping opportunities. While the 5K and 10K races started and ended from the historic Navy Yard, the half and full marathons kicked off from downtown.

Trent Humphreys and Kristi Arledge took first for overall male and female for the full marathon, while Jay Upchurch and Kristen Downing finished first for their respective half-marathon divisions. ABC News 4’s Neville Miller won the 10K race, and Rives Poe was the first female to cross the finish line. The 5K saw a number of fierce competitors, including Wyatt Wilson, who took first for the men, and Aimee Fransen, who beat out her fellow female runners.

The Charleston Marathon benefited the R. Keith and Deborah C. Summey Youth Endowment for the Arts (YEA), a local non-profit that supports fine arts programming in Charleston County Schools.
