Spring has returned to the Lowcountry, and with it the 6th Annual Meals on Wheels Gala, which boasted a garden theme this year. Those who entered the Omar Shine Center found the space swathed in soft shades of blue and green, with beautiful floral centerpieces of blue, white, and green hydrangeas decorating each table.

Partygoers perused the silent auction and sipped cocktails before finding their table and hitting the food stations. A plethora of small plates awaited hungry guests, and most guests took a lap around before making their choices.

Featured restaurants included 17 North Roadside Kitchen, BACCO Italian Restaurant, Carrabba’s, CRAVE Kitchen, Eastern Flair Catering, Gullah Cuisine, Heirloom Eats, Hucks Lowcountry Table, Lowcountry Eats, and Outback Steakhouse. The small plates ranged from Southern barbecue to sashimi style tuna and traditional Italian gnocchi, and partygoers seemed to love the variety of the gourmet smorgasbord. While many of the plates offered substantial, protein-heavy, savory dishes, Huck’s Lowcountry Table served up a light, refreshing option: chilled cucumber and buttermilk soup with sweet pickled plums, garlic, cucumber, whipped beets, carrot coulis, and chili oil croutons. Gullah Cuisine’s Lowcountry shrimp and grits were also a hit, as was Carrabba’s dish of steamed Prince Edward Island mussels.

After eating their fill, guests settled in to enjoy the live music before the live auction. Auctioneer Tom Crawford took the stage, and soon the bids were flying. Those who attended gave generously and quickly to support the cause, making the 6th Annual East Cooper Meals on Wheels Gala another success for our community.

East Cooper Meals on Wheels delivers daily meals to local residents who are homebound or unable to provide for their own dietary needs, as well as advocating on behalf of recipients whose needs exceed the scope of local programs.
