Spoleto Finale Sips
Cool down your summer picnic with a lemonade cocktail

Written by Kinsey Gidick

Planning your Spoleto Finale picnic? As you’re packing the pimiento cheese, chicken salad, and deviled eggs, don’t forget the drinks. Because when it’s hotter than a June bride in a feather bed (as the festival finale tends to be) there’s only one thing for it: a cool cocktail. And as writer Jen Dienst points out in The Drink section of our June issue, “Huckleberry Win,” when life hands Southerners lemons, we make lemonade and spike it.

Patrick Emerson, wine and beverage director for Maverick Southern Kitchens, has the perfect lemonade-based libation for the show—High Cotton’s refreshing Huck Finn cocktail. “It’s sort of a local Arnold Palmer, designed for sipping on a front porch on a Friday night with friends,” he says. Or in this case, sipping on the enormous Middleton Place lawn with more than 3,000 friends as you listen to Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole. Use Emerson’s recipe to whip up a batch of this Maverick Southern Kitchens Very Very Berry Vodka, lemonade, and soda water treat for the show, or stop by High Cotton for a post-performance reprieve during these final days of Spoleto 2012.
