Canvasing the City

The Halloween revelry may have quieted just last night (err, this morning), but in true Holy City fashion, we’re already gearing up for another big weekend. And this time, its art that’s being fêted, as the Charleston Fine Arts Dealers’ Association hosts their Fine Art Annual from November 2-4.

Start the weekend with a Friday evening stroll among CFADA member galleries downtown, many launching brand-new exhibits, with featured artists on hand to greet patrons. Then, keep the good times rolling at the Gibbes Museum during Society 1858’s Rock, Scissors, Art on Paper party ($40; $30 advance). From 8 to 10:30 p.m., guests can enjoy wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres while perusing the Art on Paper Fair that runs all weekend, offering works for sale from 12 of the Southeast’s premier dealers.

The next morning, Painting in the Park begins bright and early (9 a.m.) in Washington Square—stop by to watch regionally and nationally known artists paint plein air. The Annual High School Art Competition will also be underway, with pieces by the city’s most talented students on display.

See a work you want on your own walls? Snap it up at Saturday evening’s Buy Art reception at the Gibbes ($65; $55 advance), where all of the paintings created during the plein air demos will be up for auction. Funds raised during the event help buy art supplies for Charleston County high schools. Come join in the fêting and fundraising!
