Art, Oysters, & Barn Raisers
Don’t let the Restaurant Week food coma prevent you from planning ahead for the eventful—not to mention gorgeous—weekend ahead

January, boring and dreary? Not in Charleston! This weekend’s packed with so many events—cultural, musical, fundraising, and more—that the challenge is narrowing down the options. Here, check out our day-by-day picks!

Friday
Begin the weekend with some artful insight as three new exhibits open, all with ties to the Lowcountry. The Gibbes Museum is launching “The Art of Alfred Hutty: Woodstock to Charleston,” a retrospective of some 60 paintings, etchings, drypoints, and lithographs by the artist who was an integral part of the Charleston Renaissance. (To learn more about Hutty, read our January feature, “A Life’s Work,” by clicking here ). Without leaving the museum, also catch the opening of “Jill Hooper: Contemporary Realist,” featuring the Charleston resident’s classically inspired landscapes, portraits, and still-lifes (sketches and completed paintings alike). Both exhibits: January 20-April 22, Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St. Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m. $9; $7 senior/student/military; $5 ages six-12; free for child under six. (843) 722-2706, www.gibbesmuseum.org

For evening enrichment, cruise over to the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, which is hosting an opening reception for “Aggie Zed: Keeper’s Keep” from 5 to 7 p.m. The imaginative exhibition features sculptures, installations, paintings, drawings, and sketchbooks by Zed, a Sullivan’s Island native whom you can meet at the event. Exhibit: January 20-March 10, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, College of Charleston, 161 Calhoun St. Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free. (843) 953-4422, www.halsey.cofc.edu

Saturday
Open your ears—and hearts—to two tuneful fundraisers. Visit Sewee Outpost for Music and Oysters for Wildlife, benefiting the South Eastern Wildlife and Environment Education Association. Occasional Milkshake with Mark Bryan, Danielle Howle with Fireworks, and Red Dog Ramblers set the tempo as you dive into all-you-can-eat oysters. Sewee Outpost, 4853 US 17 N., Awendaw. Saturday, 2 p.m. $40; $35 advance; free for child under 12 with adult. (843) 928-3493, www.seweeassociation.org

Later, pull out your black-tie best for the “It’s Black and White” benefit. Enjoy music by Atlanta party band Yacht Rock Schooner while raising awareness and funds for Share Our Suzy (S.O.S.), a nonprofit determined to relieve the financial burden of women in Charleston and Columbia who are fighting breast cancer. Harborside East, Mount Pleasant. Saturday, 7-11 p.m. $100; $75 advance. (843) 410-7970, www.shareoursuzy.org

Sunday
With Sunday’s forecast calling for sun and a high of 70 degrees, the weather seems to be smiling on the Keegan-Filion Farm Barn Raising. Patrick Properties Hospitality Group organized the event after a December 4 fire at Keegan-Filion consumed a 1930s barn, killed more than 100 turkeys, and destroyed feed and farm tools. Help the Filions—who supply many of Charleston’s favorite restaurants—begin rebuilding by gathering at Lowndes Grove Plantation to dine on oysters as well as a feast prepared by 14 local chefs, including Sean Brock, Nathan Thurston, Mike Lata, and Jeremiah Bacon. Lowndes Grove Plantation, 266 Saint Margaret St. Sunday, 1-4pm. $50. https://www.facebook.com/events/324540444236573/
