Hand to God

Who ever said puppet shows were just for children? This Tony-nominated comedy, performed both on and off Broadway, has laughs in store for mature audiences, so be sure to leave the kiddos at home. The show, set in the quiet, hyper-religious town of Cypress, Texas, tells of Jason, a teenager whose life is turned upside down following the death of his father. To cope, he joins the Christian Puppet Ministry, which seems to offer an outlet for his grief. Jason’s life, however, is not lacking in the usual chaos of teenagerhood: as he attempts to navigate relationships with the girl next door, the school bully, the town pastor, and his mother,  his puppet develops a startling personality of its own, threatening to wreak even more havoc than before. Threshold Repertory Theatre, 84.5 Society St. Thursday-Saturday, 7:30pm; Sunday, 3pm. $25-$15.
