Debby Stephenson, founder and director of Courageous Kidz

Courageous Kidz is a nonprofit organization that “creates a safe haven for kids with cancer and their families” by offering emotional and financial support, including “Days of Magic” for the children, a calendar of events for the families, and special fundraisers.

Rotary Club of Daniel Island

A local chapter of the membership organization Rotary International, the Rotary Club of Daniel Island is entering its seventh year of service to the community. Their annual Charity Duck Race has raised approximately $270,000 ($145,000 for local, national, and international Rotary projects and $125,000 for direct donations to charities). Some of the area charities that have benefitted from the event include East Cooper Meals-on-Wheels, East Cooper Community Outreach, Boys & Girls Clubs, Lowcountry Food Bank, Crisis Ministries, Operation Home, United Methodist Relief Center, Junior Achievement, Friends of the Berkeley County Library, Trident Literacy Association, Down Syndrome Association, and Hospice of Charleston.

Harriet Smartt, arts advocate

Harriet Smartt is actively involved with the Gibbes Museum of Art, the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, and the South Carolina Arts Alliance, as well as the Center for Women and Women Making a Difference.
