Buzzing area schools.

Students in 10 local schools will get a sweet surprise this month when they find an observation honeybee hive inside their media center or science lab. The summer installations at Burke Middle, Whitesides Elementary, and more came courtesy of The Bee Cause Project, which executive director Tamara Enright explains “was born when I met Ted Dennard, founder of Savannah Bee Company, and realized we both wanted to pass on our love of honeybees to young people.” She and Dennard install the hives—which connect to the outdoors so the bees can gather nectar and pollinate plants—for free, with each school running an annual fundraiser selling Bee Cause Honey. Earnings support the nonprofit’s mission of installing hives in 1,000 schools around the country, starting right here in Charleston.
