Fashion and film on display for a good cause? Sign me up! That was my response when The Angel Posse—a group founded by Robin Lee of Robin Lee Models, Kristen Armstrong of The Charlestonista, and Arlene Lagos of D.A.M.E. Media—asked me to get involved with next Thursday’s first annual Film Meets Fashion event. They developed this affair to merge and showcase two rapidly progressing local industries, all to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Carolina. “Independent film and emerging fashion design are very important to the growth of our area and region,” says Lee. “The goal is to transform art, fashion, film, and music to pave the way to support local charities.” Taking place at Memminger Auditorium, the festivities will begin with a cocktail hour featuring two signature drinks before attention shifts to the runway. “We’re adding a little twist on the fashion shows by having the models walk to films by up-and-coming filmmakers,” Lee reports. Six independent shorts—Whirlwind, Song of Pumpkin Brown, The Movie Critic, Wanders, Duet, and Butterflies Wake—have been selected to play alongside runway shows from Billy Reid, Clewis Reid, Suite 33, Hannalei Taylor, Poe Studio, and Lucinda Eden. Film Meets Fashion has enlisted a roster of hosts, including writer, director, and cinematographer Michael Givens; Miss South Carolina Valarie Kobrovsky; Charleston Scene editor and spoken-word artist Marcus Amaker; filmmaker and costumer for the hit TV series Army Wives Karen Keyes; my son, local actor Khari Lucas; and of course, yours truly, to introduce the shows. During the event, a silent auction, featuring Andy Warhol’s original Howdy Doody screen print donated by the Everett White Gallery of Sullivan’s Island, will be held in the lobby. The bidding on that prize starts at $25,000, but there will be a host of great items in a range of prices, so bring your checkbook and dress to impress for this fashion-forward charity event. Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain St. Thursday, 6-10 p.m. $35; $75 VIP. (843) 259-0095, www.filmmeetsfashion.com To purchase tickets, click here. |
