August Foodie Fun

Darcy Shankland, editor-in-chief

The August 2009 issue is out on the streets, but I wanted to give you an additional heads up on some not-to-miss foodie fun (for great causes) this month:

Tomorrow night, August 6, Louie's Kids is hosting its first annual Big Chef Little Chef competition/soiree at the Civic Design Center downtown (6:30 to 9 p.m.). This event pairs some of the participants of Louie's Kids Fit Club with local top chefs in teams to prepare healthy, but delicious dishes.

There will be food, drink, Lowcountry Live’s own Ryan Nelson and Dave Williams as emcees, and some great kids from this year's programs. As you may have read in previous blogs, I am a mentor with Louie's Kids Fit Club, so meet me and my mentee Miracle there! Tickets are $35 or $40 at the door. Buy your tickets today online at www.louieskids.org. Click on "Donate Now" and add BCLC in the comments field to denote Big Chef Little Chef.

On Monday, August 17, local foodies can celebrate Julia Child’s Birthday with the Charleston Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier (LDEI) during a special screening of Julie & Julia at the Terrace Theatre on James Island (7:30 p.m.), followed by a selection of her famous cakes.

A prepaid $12 ticket (deadline: Thursday, August 13) gets you in the door and benefits Crisis Ministries and the Culinary Scholarship Fund of LDEI. Mail your check to Les Dames d’Escoffier, 100 Queen St., Charleston, SC 29401 and include your e-mail address for confirmation. Contact CharlestonLDEI@aol.com with any questions.

Bon Appetit!
