Brisk, wintery temperatures greeted those who donned their brightest, warmest red athletic attire and turned out to the 3rd Annual Go Red 5K Run and Walk at Patriot’s Point in Mount Pleasant. Each year the race is held in memory of Robin Seay, and the event strives to raise funds for prevention and awareness of heart disease as the #1 cause of death among women.

The runners lined up along the starting line, the buzzer sounded, and they were off. While some of the attendees were serious runners seeking their best times, others were content to power walk or jog the course in support of the cause.

Those left behind to cheer on the sidelines found themselves drawn to the patio, where heating lamps and hot coffee helped everyone stay comfortable until the first runner appeared on the horizon.

Many people gradually made their way down to cheer the participants across the finish line, laughing and marveling at some of the more creative get-ups. Brian Flowers and Matt Huffman both crossed the finish line in red tinsel wigs to great applause, while Gail Addison’s proud husband Jasper declared that he was her “husband and number one fan”.

The Go Red Run is hosted by MUSC, and their goal is to “promote a heart healthy lifestyle for the entire family while educating the low-country about heart disease and stroke which are, respectively, the first and third leading causes of death in the U.S.”
