Soaring temperatures and sporadic showers did nothing to put a damper on Camp Happy Days’ first annual Bed Race, and spectators flocked to Hampton Park for a little bit of bedlam. The grassy area looked like a cross between a party and a yard sale, with colorfully decorated mattresses and precariously constructed beds strewn across the grass or lining up to race while the costumed competitors, ranging from the Flintstones to the “Redneck Yacht Club,” egged each other on and enjoyed the day’s festivities.
Each race was as entertaining as it was unpredictable, and several of the beds left pieces behind as they struggled across the finish line to bouts of laughter. “We rode it until the wheels came off!” contestant Galia Walker giggled. “No, seriously. They actually fell off,” her teammate added, pointing to the bed posts wrapped in duct tape.
Once the final bed rolled across the finish line, competitors flopped on their beds or joined the spectators in the shade as they waited for the awards ceremony. Tom Crawford from ABC News 4, Sean Mack from 92.5 The Box, and actress Brigid Brannagh from Army Wives served as judges, and categories included Fastest Bed, People’s Choice, and What Were You Thinking among others.
The Marines’ team took Fastest Bed by .001 of a second, while the People’s Choice and the Best Decorated medals went to the Flintstones and the coveted What Were You Thinking Award went to Kickin’ Chicken of Summerville. First place trophies were awarded to the Redneck Yacht Club, Firminator, and Fun in the Sun for their respective draws, but everyone had a blast and was happy to help out a great organization.
