April showers did nothing to deter local foodies from heading out to the 5th Annual Chef’s Potluck at Middleton Place, benefiting Lowcountry Local First. Partygoers cheerfully donned parkas and slogged through the mud to the fete, which took place in the Pavilion Space and an adjoining tent.

The space was packed with a young, hip crowd, and they descended on the tables of gourmet dishes like a cloud of locusts. Guests could be overheard arguing over which dish was the best, but competition was stiff as the list of participants included the likes of such Charleston culinary giants as FIG, SNOB, The Fat Hen, The Glass Onion, Husk, Two Boroughs Larder, Cru Cafe, and The Grocery, among others.

Each dish was more delicious than the last, and happy gourmands clustered around tables as they tucked into SNOB Chef Shawn Kelly’s Vietnamese subs with daikon salad, Daniel Island Club Chef Tyler Dudley’s compress beet and arugula salad, and Two Boroughs Larder Chef Joshua Keeler’s Clammer Dave’s clams with Benton’s ham and spring pea veloute. Local beer, Firefly Farm cocktails, and wine were flowing freely, and people perused the silent auction while eating and drinking their fill.

Local musicians Jonathan Gray, Bill Carson, Jack Berg, and Ron Wiltrout kept the afternoon festive as Garage Cuban Band rocked out with their unique take on Cuban jazz, and more and more partygoers could be spotted bustin’ a move to the irresistible music as the party wore on.

The carefree afternoon was a perfect celebration of our local community, and everyone was pleased to support Lowcountry Local First. The Charleston-based non-profit organization is committed to educating and encouraging the public to invest in their local economy in all aspects of life.
