WEB EXTRA! Paddling to North America’s last remaining round-sided fort, the desolate Castle Pinckney

Rebuilt with brick in the early 1800s, Pinckney was thereafter called a castle for its complex shape and curved outer walls.
On December 27, 1860, a week after South Carolina seceded from the Union, Fort Pinckney (bottom) was surrendered to the South Carolina militia by Union troops, who retired to Fort Sumter (top) to join Major Robert Anderson.
