At nearly 27,000 acres, the park includes the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. Exiting from I-26, the drive is on two-lane roads for more than 30 miles to the park entrance. Along the way are views of the Congaree River, railroad crossings, tidy churches and farms, and the town of St. Matthews, the seat of Calhoun County.

Congaree National Park has one of the tallest temperate deciduous forests in the world—taller than the old-growth forests found in Japan, the Himalayas, Southern South America, and all of Eastern Europe. Its National Champion loblolly pine is 167 feet tall and almost 15 feet in circumference.

There are more than 20 miles of canoe trails on Cedar Creek; put in on your own or join one of the weekly ranger-guided canoe tours.
