Healthy Competition
Next Thursday, local top toques and their Louie’s Kids chefs in training will serve up great food for a good cause at Lowndes Grove Plantation

When given free range in the kitchen, most kids opt for sugary sweets and fat-laden snacks instead of something nutritious. Louie’s Kids—a Charleston-based national organization that fights child obesity through education, fitness, mentoring, counseling, and more—has a novel way to guide children away from most preservative-heavy pantry fare: pair local chefs with the organization’s Fit Club participants to create great-tasting, healthy dishes that the child can prepare again on his or her own.

Dubbed the “Big Chef Little Chef” competition, this fundraiser—taking place Thursday, June 16 at Lowndes Grove Plantation—includes pros such as Ben Berryhill of Red Drum, Sean Brock of Husk, Marc Collins of Circa 1886, Craig Deihl of Cypress, Fred Neuville of Fat Hen, Nico Romo of Fish, Ken Vedrinski of Trattoria Lucca, Michelle Weaver of Charleston Grill, Cary Zapatka of Square Onion, and John Zucker of Cru Café. Join us for this feel-good event, which includes sampling all of the Big Chef Little Chef creations, voting for the winner, and music. Best of all, the proceeds benefit Louie’s Kids, helping more local children learn how to eat well, exercise, and be healthy. And be sure to get your tickets soon—Big Chef Little Chef sold out last year.
