Kiz Studios creates a colorful and comical video game world
Hidden amidst the rural wilds of John’s Island is a virtual world inhabited by heroes and monsters, friendly globs of muck and no-good goons. Mysteries, adventures, and plenty of comedy abound in this ever-evolving land of video games—three mobile and one online—that Kiz Studios designs and develops. Founders Chris Moreau and Ashley Johnson head up the company’s corporate headquarters in Cumming, Georgia, while Ashley’s younger brother, Stephen, serves as chief creative officer here in the Lowcountry.
Last month, the studio’s online title, “SmashMuck Champions,” launched into Early Access on the Steam online gaming portal (store.steampowered.com) at the PAX Prime gaming conference in Seattle. “Early Access” means that the game is available even though it’s still being developed, with players invited to give feedback that helps shape the final product. A multi-player fighting game, “SmashMuck” shows only what Stephen calls “cartoon violence,” demonstrating one of Kiz Studios’ core philosophies. “Games don’t have to be gratuitously violent to be fun,” says Stephen. Look for the group to release two more mobile games by the end of the year.
Here’s the scoop on Kiz Studios’ four games—currently all free for limited play
SmashMuck Champions: (Online for Mac & PC) Arena combat game in which players build their own teams, customizing and training fighters for battle
Critter Escape: (Mobile on iOS & Android) Players must escape from a secret research facility, avoiding guards and collecting items along the way.
Chuck the Muck: (Mobile on iOS & Android) A “physics-based adventure game” in which players gather crystals to feed a little blob named Chuck, venturing past erupting volcanoes, shooting “ooze cannons,” and more
Muck Comics: (Mobile for iPhone, iPad, iTouch) An animated comic book with special “3D MotionView technology”
