While DuBose Heyward may be best known as the author of Porgy, the book that inspired the opera Porgy and Bess, historians believe he deserves even more credit as a Southern literary innovator. Join a panel discussion with best-selling novelist Dorothea Benton Frank, College of Charleston archivist Harlan Greene, and Heyward biographer James Hutchisson for “DuBose Heyward, the Undersung Hero of the Southern Renaissance.” For this Southern Artists Celebratory Series (SACS) event, the panelists discuss the life and work of this native Charlestonian. In addition, learn more about Heyward through other SACS offerings, including readings from Heyward’s Charleston poems and book, as well as performances from the celebrated opera. $21
